Congrats Photo Winners!

Happy Monday(?). First of all, a big congrats to the photo contest winners. “Mama Sledge” held on, but it was pretty close:

1) Mama Sledge (pictured above)- 92 votes (29%)

2) Devard Daaaughhhling – 85 votes (27%)

3) Bone the Dawgs – 82 votes (26%)

4) Li’l Cougs – 56 votes (17%)

5) U-Dub Asskick – 42 votes (13%)

6) Stiffmeister’s ???? – 21 votes (6%)

314 of you took the time to vote, so, thank you.

Each of the top five finishers will be contacted with their choice of prizes. Mama Sledge will get first pick, Devard Daaaaaughhling gets second pick of what’s left, and so on. And Stiffy, sorry for the 6th place finish. Something tells me we’ll run into you this fall and Hooty will buy you a pitcher anyway? So really, you’re ALL WINNERS!

And the reason we went with this contest in the first place? We’re going to make a new blog header sometime this summer, and we want to incorporate your pics as part of said header. But it doesn’t have to stop there with the contest finalists. If any of you have any ideas on what would make a great header, please feel free to share! Contact us at, or just leave a comment, whatever. We will also update the photo gallery that you see on the top-right of the site, so again, anything you want to share, send it on. We want to involve you as much as we can.

Moving on, there were some tough cuts at WSU late last week. A casualty of the new era of tight spending? Sports Management is going to be cut from WSU. While in Pullman I wasn’t part of that program myself, I know several people who were. Our own Michelle is part of the program now, and has helped create a Save Sport Management campaign on Facebook. Check it out if you get the chance. Over 960 people have joined their group, and the list continues to grow. And straight from the Facebook page:

They will host a feedback forum on the budget noon-1 p.m. Monday, May 4, in the CUB auditorium. JOIN THE “SAVE SPORT MANAGEMENT!” RALLY!!! WE WILL START AT CLEVELAND HALL ON MONDAY, MAY 4TH AT 11:15 AM AND MARCH TO THE CUB FOR THE Q & A SESSION.

Budget cuts suck, but it is part of the times today. Even big, bad UW had to cut their swimming programs. And per Steve Kelley, UW A.D. Scott Woodward is MEAN! Woodward took all of 30 seconds from criticizing Jim Sterk and Elson Floyd to inform the UW swimmers that they were done, buh-bye.

But to all of you involved in the WSU Sports Management cause, GOOD LUCK TO YOU!

Finally, it’s going to be slow in the WSU universe. Football news is heading into a dead period (unless something happens off the field….fingers crossed). But we will still try and fill the void. Look for our little spring “fishwrap” series to start soon, where we’ll look at each WSU opponent for the upcoming 2009 season and see if we can get a read of what we’re in for next fall.

That’s it for today. Enjoy it, and GO COUGS!

Does Woodward have any class at all? His childish and shady behavior recently would make me very worried if I was a UW supporter. First the outrageous apple cup negotiations, then the bizarre criticisms of Sterk and Floyd, and now this heartless display towards his own athletes. Regardless of the financial decision on whether the fuskies should cut their swimming program or not, I don’t see how it’s at all necessary to slap their student athletes in the face like that. It sounds like he completely did it without class or remorse. If our AD ever did something like that I would be VERY upset, regardless of the sport or the reasons why it was cut. I feel that Sterk is a very competent and professional AD and am almost positive that he would take a little more than 30 seconds out of his day if it comes down to dropping a program (which it looks like it will more and more everyday).

I suppose this is cougar alumni’s fault as well?

If I was a UW guy, I wouldn’t exactly be thrilled with Woodward. But UW is pretty mad at WSU right now, so I don’t know. Maybe they are totally happy with him? He’s making rookie mistakes, but they are mistakes he probably won’t make after he’s been around the block a few times. But let’s face it, he’s had a rough few weeks. The Qwest thing, the stadium failing, now having to axe a program.

The things I’ve heard about the guy is he is ALL business. Cutting swimming, to him, is probably just a line item on the budget and to be rid of it helps him do his job, nothing more than that. It sounded so cold and impersonal, I’m surprised he didn’t just “Twitter” the news. “I want you off campus by 8 AM Monday morning! And you now all…ALL ELIGIBLE FOR MILITARY SERVICE!”

Oh, and yes, I agree, Sterk is professional. Totally. But I will say that he’s not the warmest guy in the room. I’ve been to a few functions, and I noticed and have heard that he doesn’t come out and engage you if he doesn’t know who you are. That can be off-putting to the average Joe who might want to feel like his help is appreciated (like me)?

But at the same time, I don’t want our AD to be full of it, you know? I don’t want the used car salesman approach (no offense if you move used cars btw). And his actions with the latest garbage between UW and WSU have been outstanding. He never once got in the mud, and that is something we all can be proud of!

  3. Milky Jones Says:

Any chance we can get a uni watch? I have been dieing for one and this will tie us over until the unveiling…

  4. Sedihawk Says:

Hey Milky, we ran the uni watch last year. Here is a link for the road versions:

And a link for the home version:

I just don’t know what else we could add now, to what’s already been done?

I did hear we’re probably at least a month and change from seeing the new uni’s, unless they get leaked. June 12th most likely.

  5. Lucas Says:

I wrote to Ted Miller’s blog last week, trying to get him to say Sterk handled this more professionally, but I think he disagreed.–Shouldn-t-USC-redshirt-Barkley-.html

  6. Sedihawk Says:

Hey Lucas, I saw that this AM and wondered if that was anyone we might know! I was a little surprised he came down in the middle. I don’t know what else Sterk could have done better than he did in all this, and he never resorted to what Woodward did, other than to say it was unbelievable that Woodward would call out Elson Floyd!

  7. kaddy Says:

I will say that I’m not a big donor by any means, but Sterk has always recognized me from the first time I met him. He’s always been very friendly and relaxed, too. I can’t say enough good things about him.

  8. sedihawk Says:

I guess it has to be said…..he’s just not that into me! 🙂 I will live. I am glad to hear that, and believe me when I say I am not ripping him or anything. There is no doubt who I would rather have running the show than that guy. Maybe Kaddy, or even Hooty, but that’s it.

  9. Soze Says:

I second Hooty’s nomination for WSU AD whenever Sterk steps down.

This is Rob, I never got an email about coming in 2nd place for the photo contest. I hope those prizes are still available. I wanted the DVD of the Holiday Bowl. That was my first year at WSU. Take care.

  11. sedihawk Says:

Rob, I emailed the winner asking what she wanted for first place, but I haven’t heard back from her yet. I will email you directly when she has made her choice and you can pick from what’s left. I will try her again today.
