9/21 coaches show recap

Interesting stuff:

Bob: asked about Swogger

Doba: Practiced some today. Knee has not swollen, partial tear of the PCL, says he’s doing fine, was fitted for a custom brace Monday which won’t be here till Thursday, it’s a game time decision,

Bob: asked how he got hurt

Doba: He fell on his knee, got tackled and fell directly on his knee. He said that “it didn’t hurt, just kinda wiggles when I run, should I see the trainer?” Trainer said hell I don’t even have one of those PCL’s. If there’s any question, we won’t play him. The decision is up to the medical staff.

Made a point of noting that Basler throws the ball in the fake punt play and that he wants everyone, especially Arizona, to know about the FAKE PUNT PLAY!

——— break ——-

Paul from Tacoma: Why was the first team out there in the start of the third quarter?

Doba: The starters deserved to play that first series, we played 64 kids by the end of the game, we wanted to see if they could keep the momentum for future games. Wanted to get one more score before putting in the reserves.

Bob: Derting’s stinger?

Doba: he practiced today, give credit to Idaho, their staff and team continued to play hard, our heart goes out to them with the loss of Eric, senseless.

——— break ——-

Gary in Spokane: O-line, Idaho had a pretty good surge against Howard & Johnson, still thinking about odd man alignments against Arizona

Doba: probably move & slant than change alignments. They are good and have a true freshman RT, rest are juniors & seniors.

Halle on a cell phone: Worried about inside d-line

Doba: Jordan Wright Frisbee, we tried like heck to recruit him

Bob: Jed Collins

Doba: Jed Collins, true freshamn at mlb, played three ways, career day for a freshman, blocking back, caught a pass, recovered a fumble, returned a ko 30 yards, he’s five of the 64 but we just count him once. 🙂

Bob: It’s an incestuous (word he learned in Colfax, after Doba made fun of the big word) relationship. Livengood, Casey Dunn, Neil, Galloway, Delconte, all former wsu coaches also soccer coach, their o-line coach went to the same HS as swogger, their radio announcer is from Tacoma

Doba: That’s a plethora of information (learned that from you last week after Bob teased Doba about the’big’ word)

Bob: Ran down the pac-10 schedule

Doba: It’s supposed to be 95 degrees, originally scheduled as an evening game, but money talks, playing much harder, defense is very athletic, safeties are excellent, good team speed, offense is getting a bad rap, QB is ranked 25 nation, Michael Bell, special teams are good, coach Dunn knows what we do, expects no blowouts rest of the season, lots of close games

Bob: Stoops?

Doba: Got to do some recruiting, tried to steal some of ours (Harrison was talking) got about four coach akeys over there kids obviously didn’t care for Mackovic,

Bob: Different starting times from week to week?

Doba: We have a routine, four hours pregame meal, arrive two hours prior then go to position meetings, same routine regardless of KO time. Bed check at 10:30. No family in rooms, all must meet in lobby – avoids the ‘she’s my sister stuff!’ Description og clap sessions, mental preparation. mental prep is essential but you can’t get stronger thinking about lifting weights.

Mark from Seattle: I see you took my suggestion on shotgun and what’s the biggest change going from coordinator to HC?

Doba: Thanks it’s good we have this show on Tuesday so we have time to work in your suggestions. I’ve become a cheerleader, I spend a lot of time with offense to learn, spend time with defense to lend expertise. Says he would be a better DC now, with what he’s learned about offense.

Don from Spokane: Been a Cougar since his 1953 graduation – we had one penalty!

Doba: This group of players is a good bunch of kids, very disciplined, let’s hand the ball to official, treat them with dignity and respect, don’t spin the ball, don’t make them chase it down, doubts if that [one penalty] will ever happen again but hopes it will

    Bring on the CATS!!!

Granted, I still think we lose, but I just finished reading the Stoops’ recap thing on rivals and he talked about us with such a stuck up nature…key lines, “we’re real experienced defensively” and “we match up great with them”–the latter line coming after offering ZERO respect….

I suppose that Stoops want to instill a sense of NO FEAR or intimidation, but to not talk up your opponent–especially when it has had the time of success that the Cougs have? Come on….

So, I am hoping that the dam breaks with the offense this weekend and we can erupt early in the 1st quarter like we did last year…make them throw, keep the D off of the field, and lets blow them out…

Again, don’t think it will happen, but it would be nice to go into the bye before Oregon with a good, empty can of whoop ass in hand…

No respect? What are you, Rodney Dangerfield??

I think that’s just Stoops and his whole “aura” about himself, how great he thinks he is. You know he walks around talking to those kids about how he is the one that was the mastermind behind Oklahoma, especially of course the defense. Stoops believes that he and his team is superior, and they believe that no matter what, if they do their job, they will beat anyone in America. Stoops is an ego-maniac to the nth degree!

Here’s my gut so far – exactly WHY should we be so worried about these guys? Some people say they are better than New Mexico, well, I don’t see it. New Mexico lost to WSU, beat Texas Tech, then lost a tough one in the rain at Oregon State, a game the Beavs HAD TO WIN. That’s a hell of a lot better than AZ. AZ is 1-2, and their lone W is beating Northern AZ 21-3. That’s like being cocky if WSU beat EWU 21-3. How would you feel if your lone W was an 18-point win over EASTERN, a I-AA school!?!? And they have one TD against the other two teams? If I was an AZ fan, I’d be pretty worried about having to deal with WSU, how to deal with a big strong QB like Swogger with a gun for an arm, or a running game that looks like it is getting on track, or a deep, talented group of WR’s that didn’t drop a single pass last week, or a defense that has 11 hats to the ball, EVERY SINGLE play!

I look at their offense, I mean they offer next to nothing as far as being scared. Mike Bell? He’s ok, but this isn’t Dontrell Moore, and he certainly isn’t Bobby Purify! Sure we have some young DT’s but they are talented and hungry and have players around with tremendous heart and speed. Heavner their QB?? Yes, he completes a high percentage of his passes, but it’s a bottom-line business, and he doesn’t get his guys in the end zone. Who cares if he completes a 5-yard out pattern on 3rd-and-8!?!? Great for the stats, not great for the scoreboard.

Again, ONE TD against D-I teams. Should we really be worried? They are better defensively then they have been, of course they are being “coached up” but I say our D is still better than theirs.

A lot of people will point to last week and say hey, AZ almost beat Wisconsin in Tucson, so they will beat an unranked WSU team. Well, to that I say BS! We are the team that has now gone 32-9 over the last 3+ years. We are the ones that are continuing on a tradition of winning, not starting over like Stoops and his staff. We shouldn’t be afraid, we should be relishing that this is one of our pac-10 road games.

Maybe I’m crazy, but the more I look at it, the more I think we’re going to come out on fire. I’ll give you my score tomorrow on “Football Friday(want to meet for lunch, get a burritto or something??)”, but I’m thinking we’ll win by at least 17.

“My family is so ugly, our family album contains only negatives”
    -Rodney Dangerfield

Outside of the USC and Texas games last year, this is one of the more interesting match-ups we’ve had in a while…its interesting because of the re-birth of the Holiday bowl shotgun formation as a means of running the football…then, you have the fullback set that was put in last week that is in the game plan for this week…add the emergence of Hill and a TE corps that appears to have lost the dropsies…well…

All of this comes against a defense that will scheme well, will play REALLY hard, and it will be really hot…it will be a great barometer for what the season will be like…

The key in all of this is minimizing TOs that lead to scores–a HUGE key if Brink has to play..the other factor is the running game OR scoring early and often…a 14-0 jump start will be the same as running the football…we HAVE to make the Cats throw the football–allow the D to be opportunistic and then get the hell off of the field….

The key is going to be that 1st half…I don’t care what the score is (even if we’re down)at Halftime…if we can stay off the football field on defense, I like our chances…

We’ll see…with Oregon State’s mediocrity, I am still optimistic that we can reach 8 wins…then again, if we lose this one, 6-5 may be a push…

See you tomorrow at the Burritto place on 1st?! Meet you in the Washington Mutual lobby?!!!!!!!!!!!!
